Brunswick Road

Gazey Architects were commissioned to undertake this 270sqm refurbishment, extension and internal adaptation of a large detached property in the Park Road Conservation Area of Kingston-Upon-Thames.

The brief was to subdivide the ground floor to create a self contained studio apartment in addition to the large single family dwelling.

The original Victorian property had a typically deep and narrow floor plan which limited the amount of natural daylight entering the ground floor.

The idea was to sensitively modify the property while enhancing the poorly-lit internal spaces by creating larger external openings and the introduction of a double height living space with overlooking mezzanine study.

The single-storey rear extension replaced an existing smaller extension containing the current kitchen. Its addition allowed the reconfiguration of the ground floor to strengthen the relationship between the house and the garden while providing a more useable kitchen, dining and living space.
